Like all of Midway's arcade-sytle sports games, NHL Hitz 20-02 utilizes a cheat system that allows gamers to manipulate a set of three icons before proceeding to a game. Any codes entered affect the upcoming game only, and reset once the game concludes. To enter these codes, make the icons on the screen appear as they do in the following table, by pressing the corresponding buttons.

To unlock higher Skill Competition levels, clear all of the Skills on the current level. Beating Level 1 unlocks Level 2. Beating 2 unlocks Level 3.

Get trivia questions right after you play a game to earn 60-90 points to spend in the Hockey Shop. There are over 2000 questions, so you better start reading that NHL stat book!

If you lose a fight during the game, the player that lost will be unavailable to you for the rest of the contest.

Depending on your difficulty setting, you will earn different amounts of points for winning Exhibition and Championship Games.
